KEFALONIA

A NATURAL WONDER

LUSH MOUNTAINS, UNDERGROUND LAKES, LOVELY VILLAGES, STUNNING STRETCHES OF SAND, MEDIEVAL CASTLES AND MONASTERIES

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and the 6th largest in Greece. Each year it welcomes thousands of worldwide visitors attracted by its famous exquisite beaches and impressive landscapes. It is an ideal destination to relax. There are plenty of sea-front villages that have preserved much of their original Venetian architecture, despite the devastating earthquakes that have shattered the island; they have certainly left their mark on the rugged coastline, which is made up of limestone rocks and white sand. The lush, mountainous interior with its herbs, olive groves and vineyards, offers extremely rewarding views that will soothe your soul.

Kefalonia can be a week-long holiday destination and you may be tempted to stay longer. Visitors will be seduced by the abundance of lovely villages, the stunning stretches of sand and sights such as medieval castles and monasteries.

Sami

Sami is a beautiful coastal town and our recommended stop for tonight. It is the second largest port of Kefalonia and serves daily trips to Patra and Ithaca. The village has 1000 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in agriculture and fishing. The attractive waterfront, the wide paved streets and the Venetian-style buildings offer a unique charm and reflect the rich heritage of the island. The main coastal road consists of modern amenities, shops and lovely cafes and restaurants. Sami is not a place where you can party until dawn. However, there are few bars available and nights can get lively. During summer, the municipality of Sami organises interesting cultural events and festivities such as concerts and theatrical performances. Ask the locals to know all details.

Nature generously offered Sami a dream mountainous landscape with lush vegetation, underground caves and beautiful lakes. Atop one of the surrounding hills hides the monastery of Agrilia, offering great views to the entire area. The stunning underground lake and cave-system of Melissani is a must-see, although very touristy during peak summer months. The lake is 30m deep and you can dive it with a local guide. The cave of Drogarati is another impressive sight worth visiting. The beach of Antisamos with its crystal-clear turquoise waters is just 5 km (15’ drive) from Sami. Parts of ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ movie were filmed in Sami and Antisamos’ spectacular scenery.

Agia Effimia

The village of Agia Effimia is located just 30’ sail (15’ drive) north of Sami. It was totally rebuilt following the devastating 1953 earthquake. Today it is a picturesque village with friendly locals and a bustling harbour, popular with yachties during the summer months. There are plenty of amenities and a great selection of restaurants, cafes and small shops.

Road tripping Nothern Kefalonia

Starting from Sami, the Melissani Cave is a quick 15’ drive. Continue to the spectacular Myrtos beach, which is consistently ranked among the most beautiful in the world! Swim in its white-azure waters and take your time to enjoy the incredible surroundings. Then head towards the secluded and picturesque Asos village, built within an impressive topography around the homonymous peninsula. You will fall in love with the scenery and breath-taking views along the way. Asos is a spectacle for the eyes, with its bougainvillea-filled streets and traditional colourful houses nested in the forested hills, creating a unique setting. If time allows, head to the gorgeous Antisamos beach for a dive.

Fiskardo

Fiskardo is a picturesque and cosmopolitan village with pastel-coloured Venetian-style houses surrounding a beautiful harbour. Since you made it to Kefalonia then Fiskardo is a must visit, ideally by boat! Part of Fiskardo’s charm is that together with Asos, they are the only villages in Kefalonia to not have been devastated by the 1953 earthquake. It is a major sailing port and extremely popular for all sailors and yachties in the summer months. In the evenings, guests and celebrities stroll along the delightful waterfront along the numerous anchored boats creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere. There is a great selection of fine-dining and traditional restaurants offering delicious food, and the smell of grilled seafood dominates the air. There are also plenty of bars where you can get a drink, have fun and relax.
